Now that summer has ended and cooler weather is setting in, there’s a mad rush in the stores. But it's not the shoppers yet. It's holiday hiring season kicking into gear, in what is predicted to be a particularly fierce competition for seasonal help.

National Retail Federation Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz says despite “significant economic unease,” retailers are expecting a busy holiday. “…current economic data and the recent momentum of the economy show that we can expect a much stronger holiday season than last year. Job growth and higher wages mean there’s more money in families’ pockets, so we see both the willingness and ability to spend this holiday season.”

The NRF estimates holiday sales will grow between 3.8 and 4.2 percent over 2018, which means that there's going to be another heavy demand for the limited pool of magical elves.

Just how many elves? The NRF says retailers are expected to hire between 530,000 and 590,000 temporary workers for the holiday season. That’s a lot of pointy hats.

Tis the Season of Hiring Challenges

Low unemployment and extra busy stores seem like a great way to ring in the holiday cheer. But it's a confluence of good things that will also create some additional challenges for employers.

Retail chains and e-commerce fulfillment centers are getting an early start on the process in anticipation of an extra busy season. The Seattle Times reports that Target, which is among the largest national employers, plans to hire more than 130,000 workers this holiday season for its 1,800 stores. They’ve already opened up their seasonal employment application with hiring events starting as early as Oct. 11. Considering 40% of their seasonal workers stayed with the company after the 2018 holiday season, Target is preparing for an influx of temporary employees that could potentially stay on long-term.

Bonuses, Flexible Schedules and Job-Sharing Options

To keep up with the competition, some staffing companies are offering hiring incentives like sign-on and completion bonuses, flexible schedules, and job-sharing options to lure and keep new recruits. Other companies have reportedly increased their minimum wage.

With more than a month left until the season’s biggest sale, Black Friday, most consumers still haven’t started looking seriously at their holiday shopping list. But once they do, retailers should be prepared for what could be the country’s biggest holiday season in over 17 years, according to NRF’s historical holiday sales report.
