Survey: One-Third of Payroll Providrs Using Old Software | Time Rack

Nearly 1 in 3 payroll professionals are using software that is 10 or more years old, according to an American Payroll Association (APA) survey that polled 1,000 payroll professionals across all industries in small, mid-size and enterprise-level organizations.

With 29% of participants acknowledging that their payroll solutions had not been updated since at least 2007, the survey suggests that a significant number of payroll providers may be at risk of falling behind. Only one quarter of the respondents reporting having software less than three years old.

The Risks of Outdated Software

The problems created by outdated software can be significant. Outmoded or manual processes can lead to errors that affect employee retention, increase the risk of compliance issues and make it difficult to report and track key performance indicators, leaving a business at further risk of falling behind.

Wage and hour errors can be particularly costly. Last year, the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division recovered more than $270 million in back wages for more than 240,000 workers whose employers had not fully complied with wage and hour laws. In addition to back wages, violations also subject employers to potential penalties and other damages.
